He pauses as if actually expecting an answer, but the inhuman snarls ripping from my chest are all I can manage. I want to rip him limb from limb. I want to make him scream in agony. I want to make him beg for his own end.
But these fucking chains have me bound so impossibly, I’ll never reach him.
And my lack of response doesn’t seem to faze him in the least. Leaning forward in a conspiratorial whisper, Mikhail says, “I’ll be fucking her right above your head. Literally. We’ll just be two floors above you,” he taunts, pointing to the ceiling. “And Dani won’t have a clue. Because she thinks you’re dead.”
Blind with fury, I roar, throwing every last drop of my reserved strength and body weight into a desperate effort to break my restraints and kill Mikhail with my bare hands.
But the chains are too thick, the cuffs too tight, and I thrash fruitlessly against them, jerking forward in an effort to reach Mikhail in any way I can.
He steps back, just outside my reach, a cruel smile lighting his face. Then laughing darkly, Mikhail turns to leave. “I would love to stay longer. I do always enjoy our chats. But I have a marriage to consummate.”
And with that, he’s gone.
The agony that follows his departure is unlike any I’ve ever known before. It’s worlds beyond any physical torture I might ever have to endure. And it rips through me, body and mind, piercing, cutting, shredding me until there’s nothing left of me inside.
He has Dani.
He married Dani.
I swore to protect Dani, and now she’s fallen into the hands of my worst enemy. A monster with no soul, a demon with no heart. How could she have entered into that willingly, knowing what she does about him?
I can only draw one logical conclusion from it. She didn’t.
I don’t know how. I don’t know why. But Dani’s become a prisoner like me.
And she’s just two floors above me, suffering a fate worse than death.
This truly is hell on earth.
