Becca felt like someone had just dumped a bucket of cold water over her head. Did the word “pregnant” still mean what it meant yesterday? Or was Kate using it in a new, novel way that did not imply that she, Becca, was actually with child?
“What?” she said again.
“Preg. Nant.” Kate said slowly. “As in baby. Inside of you.”
Becca looked down at her belly, as if she could see inside of it to tell if Kate was just kidding or if someone was really in there. It wasn’t working.
She smoothed her hands down her stomach and said, “Little Wookie?”
“Yeah,” Kate said with a smile.
“I have a little Wookie in me?” Becca said, almost whispering it. “Is he going to come out with a beard?”
“He might,” Wyatt said, grinning wide as he said to Griz, “You hear that, Big Man? You’re going to be a daddy!”
He punched Griz good-naturedly on the shoulder as he said it. Normally, Griz wouldn’t have so much as budged, but this time, he started swaying back and forth on his feet like a tall tree in a heavy wind.
His face was blank, almost ashen, and he was completely unresponsive to anyone as they said, “Griz? Griz, are you okay?”
Griz’s swaying became larger and larger in amplitude, until Devil cried out, “He’s going down! He’s going down!”
With that, Griz fainted dead away.
They tried to catch him, tried to hold him up as his legs went to water underneath him and he crumpled to the floor, but his size and weight dragged all of them down with him; Wyatt, Devil, Pony, even Kate ended up going along for the ride trying to prop him up. They ended up in a pile of tangled limbs on the floor, all of them trying to scramble and sort themselves out while not hurting each other in the process.
“Get his ass out of my face!” Devil said. “His ass is in my face!”
“Your ass is in mine!” Wyatt said.
In the midst of it all, Boomer sat smiling, watching the madness with undisguised amusement.
“Well,” he said. “Welcome to the family, Becca.”
