“What?”

He shows me the screen.

Tynan: Tell Dad I got myself a bride.

The hairs on my arms rise. “What does that mean?”

Devin closes his eyes and shakes his head.

“Tell me,” I demand.

He opens his eyes and swallows hard. He admits, “Maeve’s da has been placing bets with Tynan.”

“Why would he do that? He’s an O’Leary.”

“It doesn’t matter. Gamblers are gamblers. They go where the games are. And he must not have had anything else to pay with,” Devin states.

I argue, “Ya can’t let him do this. He can’t take Maeve as payment! Stop him!”

Devin’s face hardens, and he says, “Ya didn’t see the rest of the message?”

Fear fills me, and goose bumps break out on my skin. I shudder, replying, “No, I didn’t. What does it say?”

He clenches his jaw and then hands the phone back to me.

My gut dives as I stare at the message.

Tynan: Tell Dad we just finished taking our vows.
