Dorian slipped on his briefs and joined him. “The wolf?”
“Not sure, but Rex is rarely wrong when he says some things are off.”
Rex headed to the main room, then to the kitchen, and out onto the back deck. He listened, and then he saw someone running for the hedge line, and he gave chase. Just as he was nearly on him, there came a god-awful explosion from behind, and half the house was in flames.
Panic and fear roared through him as he turned and raced for the house, bursting through the back door and yelling for Colby and Dorian. “The house is on fire.” He yelled. “Keep away from the living room and front portion.” He continued to direct and made his way toward the bedroom.
Colby was putting a chair through the window and busting out the glass when he walked in. They were about to help Dorian out the window and lower him to the ground when another blast went off and flames shot up the wall in front of them. Rex soaked a few towels wrapped them around Dorian’s face, and handed one to Colby, who held it in front of his mouth and nose.
“The backdoor.” He said and pointed. “It’s a straight shot down the hall and out.” Colby nodded, and they huddled around Dorian and headed for the door. It was getting damn hot and hard to breathe. They made it out the back door but were met with another blast. Rex and Colby scooped Dorian up and got him away from the house, over to the hedge line, and sat him on the ground.
Colby was making the necessary calls when bullets started flying by. Colby dove on top of Dorian, covering him completely, and Rex went after the shooter. Bullets didn’t bother them, but they could definitely kill Dorian. He absorbed one in his arm and one in his abdomen, but they were quickly expelled. Whoever the bastard was, he didn’t understand that guns were useless with vampires or that his target was Dorian.
He followed the scent it was stronger than before, but it was the same scent he’d noticed last night. It was a wolf shifter, and he was not far ahead. He was attempting to circle around and head back to where Colby was protecting Dorian. The evil bastard was trying to get another shot at Dorian.
Rex moved fast, and the wolf saw him. He charged through the trees and hedges toward Colby and Dorian. Rex was right on his heels when he burst through the trees and once again opened fire on them.
Colby had Dorian covered and this time the wolf was shooting wildly missing his targets every time and cursing his failure to kill. The wolf turned on Rex when he managed to draw his attention and started shooting at him. Soon he was out of bullets so he shifted thinking his wolf would be more apt to be able to escape.
“Your wolf isn’t going to save you.” Rex thundered and leapt on him, crushing him into the ground. The wolf wiggled free and tried to run away but he was too slow. Rex came at him like a freight train overtaking him in seconds. Rex grabbed him by the back and lifted him over his head and then threw him back to the ground with a resounding crack.
“Who the fuck are you, and why do you hunt my adored?” Rex grabbed him again and threw him against a tree. The wolf shifted, and Rex could see him more clearly. The man from the bar lay there, the man Rex knew, his name was Dolan Pearl. “What do you want with me and mine?”
“I want you and your brother and your boyfriend dead.” He seethed. “I want the vampires to go to war with the wolves. I want your coven destroyed and this land returned to us.” He ranted and raved and then made a run at Rex with his claws extended. Rex grabbed him easily and twisted his neck until it snapped and then tore out his throat. He then heard the audible gasp from behind him and turned to see Dorian standing there next to Colby.
Colby tucked him under his arm and pulled him close. “Olsen and his men are here, and the Master has been notified,” Colby told him as they all just stood there with a dead man lying at their feet. “Sloan is out of town, so Marcus will take the lead on this incident.” Colby kept talking low and slowly, sensing that their adored was in shock.
“Who was he?” Dorian’s voice was a hesitant whisper.
“A Wolf shifter who wanted to start a war,” Rex answered and walked over to him. He reached out his hand, and thankfully, Dorian took it and held it fast.
“Did he hurt you?”
“No,” Rex answered. “Bullets have no effect on vampires. They sting a little but no lasting damage.”
“Good,” Dorian said and pulled him to stand closer.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.” He said and turned his face into Rex’s chest. Colby started to move and they both held Dorian and walked him out to the front away from the house and the dead wolf.
Olsen met them and gave them a quick report. “It was wild and poorly planned. “He began. “It would appear he was looking to inflict enough pain and destruction to cause a war. He was on his own according to the pack beta and no one knew of what he was planning apart from his brother.” That got some attention.
“What are we doing with him?” Colby snapped.
“He didn’t believe that Dolan would actually carry it out. He thought it was bluster. Marcus is looking into it, and I will report back.” He finished and turned to look at the smoldering remains of Dorian’s rental home. “I’m sorry, but we weren’t able to save anything.” He turned his attention to Dorian.
“Doesn’t matter.” He said. “The important things were saved, and they are standing here with me.” He looked up at Rex and Colby and smiled. The pale shock was dissipating, and Dorian’s color and smile were returning.
“We’ll handle this from here why don’t you take your adored somewhere warm and safe.” Olsen suggested and it sounded like a stellar idea to Rex.
“Looks like we will be moving in sooner than expected.” Dorian commented once they were dressed in borrowed sweats and on their way to Coven Kilconnor. Rex drove and Colby sat in the back cuddling Dorian.
“You know I’ll need my cuddle time once we get home.” He teased.
“I’ll give you everything you need, my love.” Dorian shot back with a wink and threw him a kiss. “Everything.”
Rex’s eyes went wide, and he barked a laugh. “We’ve created a little minx Colby. Our adored might require a spanking once we get home.”
“Don’t threaten me with a good time, boys.” Dorian chuckled at his own debauchery, and then he continued on a more serious note. “I should be traumatized and falling to pieces right now and instead I’m solid safe and secure because of you. I love you both more than I ever thought I could love anyone.”
“I love you too, Dorian. You’ve shown me what true love and a true connection feels like and it is amazing.” Colby kissed him hard on the lips. Rex pulled into the underground garage and parked near the elevators. He killed the engine and stepped out of the vehicle. When Dorian slid out of the back seat he gathered him into his arms kissing him with a hunger born out of need, fear and a love that lived deep in his heart.
“My love knows no limit with you, and I will serve you for the rest of my life.” Rex declared and kissed him again.
“I think someone promised me a delicious spanking,” Dorian commented while in the arms of his two lovers. Rex and Colby exchanged eager looks and, without hesitation, grabbed their adored and raced to the elevators.
