“Mmhmm.”
“Trust me, I hate it as much as you do. But I think it’s the right thing to do.”
Even as she spoke, her hands traced a path up my chest, testing my restraint. But I knew she was right. I wanted to spend forever with her, and the only way we’d get that chance was with the approval of our families. Waiting was the right call, and I’d wait an eternity for her.
“One last kiss. One more until Cyrus wakes. Then we’ll talk to him and we won’t have to hide anymore. One more kiss, Emilie. I didn’t know that the last one would be my last. I would’ve savored it more.”
She smiled and pulled my face down to meet hers. “One more,” she whispered against my lips. “Make it good.”
I pressed my entire body against hers before my lips followed suit, capturing her moan in my mouth. I pulled at the fabric of her skirt until I could slip my hands beneath, clawing at her thighs while she squeezed my ass. Her back arched and her chest swelled as I explored her mouth with my tongue, tasting her like she was my last meal.
I wanted that kiss to last forever. I wanted our bodies to be permanently intertwined. Our souls to form an unbreakable bond.
Emilie ran a hand over my cock, and I released a ravenous moan. We were getting carried away in the privacy of the library, but I couldn’t find it in me to stop.
All too soon, Emilie pulled back, breathing heavily and looking at me with lust-filled eyes. “We should stop.”
I merely nodded, unable to speak. Slowly, I backed away, creating an unbearable amount of space between us.
Emilie took one look at the disappointment on my face and gave me a breathtaking smile. “This isn’t the end for us, Ladon. You and I—we’re meant to be together. I feel it in my soul.” She placed a hand over her heart and I felt that same aching tug in mine.
She turned to walk away and right as she was about to round the corner, I found my voice again. “Emilie.”
She paused and looked back at me. “Yes?”
“Falling for you might be the most foolish thing I’ve ever done.” I hesitated. “But I love you.”
Her cheeks flushed the most beautiful shade of pink as she smiled. She bit her lip, looking a bit flustered. “Then I must be a fool as well, because I love you too, Ladon.”
As Emilie left the library, I leaned against one of the old shelves with a love-drunk smile on my face. Hearing her say those words…I wanted to hear them over and over again until the sound was permanently etched in my brain.
After a few more moments of paralyzing bliss, I moved toward the exit. I needed to at least attempt to get some sleep before sunrise. I rounded the corner of the aisle, and a figure in a dark cloak and light blonde hair stopped me in my tracks. From the look on her face, there was no doubt in my mind that my mother had heard at least part of the conversation between Emilie and me.
She stared at me with a mixture of empathy and frustration.
“We need to talk.”
Shit.
