Sitting out on my balcony in the winter sun is invigorating. Listening to the waves crash against the wall is the most calming noise ever. This spot right here is my happy place. Nothing else matters when I’m here.
“Harper?” I hear Drew calling from the main house, but I don’t get up. I wrap the plaid blanket around me tighter. “I’m going to find you out here frozen stiff one day. Are you okay?”
I get up from my rocking chair and walk over to my husband. I tiptoe up and kiss him to shut him up.
His hands caress my swollen belly, and our son kicks his hands. “He’s going to be a football player,” I joke.
Being thirty-nine weeks pregnant is an amazing feeling after the journey we’ve been on to get here, but it is also terrifying. I want our son here so I can finally relax. I don’t think I’ll believe we’re going to be parents until I hold him in my arms for the first time.
“As long as he doesn’t play for Celtic then he can play for whoever he likes,” says Drew. “How are you feeling?”
“Really? I’m fine. Why are you here? Your shift doesn’t finish for a few more hours. Are you checking up on me?”
“You caught me. Now, you’re really okay?”
“Yes.” I groan. “Now go back to work.”
Drew kisses me on the nose and turns around to do as I ask.
“Drew…”
“Yeah…” he calls from the kitchen.
“Do you have the police car out there?”
“Carl’s waiting for me.”
“Good, because you need to take me to the hospital.”
“What? Why?” He runs back out to me and notices the puddle on the decking.
This is like deja vu, and I remind myself that this is nothing like the last time. We are going to bring our son home.
“Drew. Get the bags. Now.”
“Right. Of course. Bags.”
He runs around like a headless chicken. If this wasn’t a serious situation, I would probably be laughing at him right now. But today is the day that we get to meet our son.

“That’s it, Harper. One more push,” calls the midwife.
I am exhausted. Twelve hours I’ve been at this labour carry on and I’m done. I should have chosen a c-section.
“I can’t.”
“You can, sweetheart. Remember you can do anything you set your mind to.” Drew wipes my head with a cold towel and I push with all I have. If this doesn’t do it…
A few moments later, I hear a screaming baby. I break. I sob. That noise is the sweetest thing that I could ever hear.
“You have a beautiful baby boy. Congratulations.”
The midwife places our baby on my chest. He’s tiny, but he’s beautiful. His crying softens when he snuggles into my chest.
I cannot describe the euphoria I feel right now. I’m on cloud nine.
“He’s beautiful, sweetheart. You have made me the happiest man alive.”
“We are finally a family of three. You, me, and Noah.”
“We’ve been blessed by the gift of life.”
And that we have. A journey like no other, but this is our end goal.
Nothing ever comes easy in life. You must work hard to get what you want. If you’re ever struggling, it doesn’t hurt to ask for help. It may just be the greatest blessing ever.
