“Goddammit,” Asher grumbled, then scooped him up and the puppy licked at his face, bonding with him right off the bat.
“He can sense you’re a softie for him,” I teased.
He tossed me a look. “You’re not helping.”
But then he chuckled as the puppy nuzzled him and he started stroking him. “This is it, though, Killian. Do you hear me?”
“I promise.”
“I’m not buying that,” Jonah chuckled, walking to Asher and fawning over the puppy too.
“Killian, he’s relenting just for you,” I said, stroking Clover. “Okay?”
“Yeah. Yeah, I know.” He looked out at Asher. “Thank you, Ash. And you’ve got my word on it.”
“Good. Now, what’s this little guy’s name?”
“He doesn’t have one yet. I’ll give you the honor.”
“Maverick,” Asher said.
“Just like you?” I asked. And his whole approach to the Infidels and everything in general. He colored outside the lines, thought outside the box, and it had played a crucial part in us being able to defeat those fuckers. In not just our success, but our survival.
“Maybe.”
“I like it,” Jonah said.
“More additions to our little family,” I mused.
The three of them looked out at me, grinning from ear-to-ear.
And then they were all wrapping themselves around me.
Holding me close.
Loving me.
And I couldn’t imagine it being any other way.
Life was so much better than I could have ever imagined.
And it was all because they’d come into my life.
We were absolutely and unequivocally made for each other.
THE END
