“You don’t need to do it, I promise you.”
“It’s for the best. I can find another job; I can work in another district. I don’t mind. I want to be with you, if that means I have to move, that’s a small price to pay.”
“I agree with you. Which is why I’m going to do it,” Cameron said.
“Cam-”
“Let me finish. I’m not going to close my practice but I’m going to expand it. I’ve talked to a few other doctors about starting a medical group with me. We would keep the current office and then open one near you. I would work primarily in that office. As the transition occurred and if my patients still wanted to see me, I would go back there.
“By doing this, it will allow me to be not only closer to you and the life you have built but our parents too. I know they are important to you and they are to me too. I have missed being around my family and I want to see them more. I think it will be important when we have kids,” Cameron said.
“Kids? You want kids?” I asked with a laugh.
“Okay, I might be the last person that you would think wants to have kids, but I do. If they are with you. I love you, now that I know you love me, I want us to get married, have kids, and live the life that we are meant to live, together.”
I heard Laura take a quick breath and Alison clasped her hands together.
“Are you asking me to marry you? Here?” I asked.
“Well, we can get married wherever you want. Yes, I want to marry you, I’m asking if you want to marry me.”
I threw my arms around Cameron and held him close. “Yes, of course I want to marry you. I love you.”
“I love you too. You have just made me the happiest man in the world,” Cameron whispered in my ear.
“Hopefully, I can keep you feeling that way for the rest of our lives.”
“If you stay by my side, you will,” he replied.
I felt Laura, then the rest of the family hugged us. I leaned my head back and put it on Alison’s shoulder.
“Welcome to the family, officially,” she said
I looked over at Cameron who was beaming at me. This was not how I thought my vacation would go, much less end. But as I looked into his eyes, I could see our future and it was going to be great.
Epilogue
Cameron
“Are you nervous?” Alison asked me as we stood at the end of the aisle.
“No. I have never been more ready for anything in my life,” I said.
I didn’t look at her as we talked but tugged on my tuxedo and looked down the aisle and where Sydney was set to come toward me any second now. It had been less than a year since we had been to the resort and we had gotten engaged. We both knew there was no other place we wanted to get married than at Maya Sunset. It was where we had met, where we had fallen in love, it was where we had to get married.
It was only because we wanted to do it during a warm spring month that we waited. I tried to convince Sydney to do a quickie marriage in Vegas but she refused.
“I’m only getting married once and I’m going to do it right. You’re just going to have to wait for me to be your wife,” Sydney said.
She had become my wife in my heart the minute she agreed to marry me. I had moved in with her but kept my place while I worked on getting my medical group set up and we found a house to buy. When we did, I sold my place, and we moved in officially together.
We had found a perfect colonial style house with a big backyard that had a pool, firepit, and large area for bar-b-be-quing. I could see it becoming the place that the family congregated for all our get-togethers. We had already had a few parties and Sydney was an exceptional host. She took to being a doctor’s wife and the entertaining she would need to do like she was born to it.
She had kept her job at the school district and I hoped she would keep teaching as long as she wanted. She was an excellent teacher and the kids deserved to have the best. She loved what she did and I was glad she didn’t have to give it up for me. I wondered if she had planned her pregnancy so that her leave would coincide with her winter vacation.
Sydney hadn’t told me she was pregnant yet, but I knew her body so well, I had seen and felt the changes. I was sure she would tell me tonight or while we were on our honeymoon. It was like her to not want to take away from our day by putting the spotlight on her or our baby.
It wasn’t what we had planned. She had wanted to wait to have kids so that we could have time as a married couple. Personally, I couldn’t be happier that she was pregnant. I wanted to have a life with her that included kids, the sooner we did, the better.
The music changed and I felt everyone tense up as they turned and stood. I looked to see Sydney standing in front of us looking a vision in her mermaid wedding dress. It seemed fitting with the beach scene. Her mother walked next to her and Sydney beamed at me as she walked towards me.
“You look beautiful,” I mouthed to her as she moved down the aisle.
I looked over at my father who would marry us and then at Laura who was Sydney’s maid of honor. It truly was a family affair and I was glad that they were not only there but were participating in our special day.
As Sydney stood next to me, I reached over and took her hands in mine. She gave them a reassuring squeeze and smiled up at me. I couldn’t believe how much I loved her and how lucky I was to have her in my life. With a wink to her, I turned to my father and let the rest of our lives begin.
